Who issues fire restrictions in Summit County?
In Colorado, county-level fire restrictions for unincorporated areas are typically enacted by the Board of County Commissioners or the County Sheriff under C.R.S. §30-15-401 and §30-10-512/513. Within Summit County, separate authorities can impose their own rules at the same time: fire protection districts (under C.R.S. Title 32), the U.S. Forest Service and BLM on federal land, Colorado Parks & Wildlife in state parks, and municipalities inside their town limits. - fires in permanent fire pits/grates at developed campgrounds and picnic areas
- natural gas/propane fire tables with on/off switches
- recreational fires on private property with a local fire district permit (commercially manufactured fire pits with ember screens)
- chain saws and equipment with spark arrestors and extinguishers

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions (Stage 2)
Prohibited:
- all fires, campfires, bonfires (including in developed campgrounds)
- charcoal grills, wood grills, chimineas, solid-fuel (wood/charcoal) fire pits, tiki torches
- fireworks (use and sale)
- hot air balloons and sky lanterns
- smoking outside an enclosed vehicle/building (cleared/designated-area exceptions per sheriff detail doc)
Allowed:
- liquid/gas-fueled heating devices, stoves, grills, lanterns, fire pits, fireplaces or fire tables with shut-off valves (at least 3 ft from flammables)
- fires inside fully enclosed permanent structures
- chainsaws WITH approved spark arrester + 8-oz 2A extinguisher + 35-in shovel
Propane fire pits: permitted · Developed-campground fires: not permitted
'Fire pits, fireplaces or fire tables that include shut-off valves are permitted' at least 3 ft from flammable materials — gas fire pits expressly allowed at Stage 2.
